Indian Fashion @ Cannes

How many of you are ardent fashion followers, I know every woman loves fashion but how many keep an eye on the trend and fashion updates? Cannes film festival in France has been one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world bringing in all film fraternity across the globe. Stars & Fashion go hand in hand and so we get to see some hottest couture in there.  Cannes has not only been the center stage for world films but also world couture.
Like every year, this year also Aishwarya is going to be at Cannes along with her father in law Amitabh Bachan, her rival Sonam Kapoor, the lovely Vidya Balan( jury member), sexy Mallika Sherawat and Frieda Pinto. Just as every time, this time too the debates have began long time back about whoz wearing what and whoz going to win the fashion battle.
Vidya as usual chose her trusted ace designer Sabyasachi for all of her appearances, Sonam had mixed choices along with her favourite Anamika Khanna, Frieda usually has gone for western designer dress, Mallika too had gone for the same.
Surprisingly Amitabh Bachan also chose to be a bit more into fashion with a stripy coat and glittering black suit at the Great Gatsby premiere. I like the stripy one better!

Aishwarya is yet to arrive on the red carpet. So far its only the battle between Sonam, Vidya, Frieda & Mallika. Frieda & Mallika have not scored big as their fashion choices weren't too flattering or experimental.

Whereas the fashionista Sonam did try some bold ways, one of which is a Anamika Khanna's saree with a long jacket along with a over sized nose ring. I personally wasn't impressed with that over sized nose ring although many applauded her bold style. I thought make up could have been far far better as the natural complexion of hers seems to be no match. It is clearly visible in that close up shot.

The other appearance of hers is the barbie doll attire with Elie Saab dress and a glittered clutch was a win win. Again I opine she should have chosen some pretty hair accessory along with it to make more appealing. The hair looks too simple.

The previous appearance of hers which was a huemn styled outfit along with funky accessory by suhani pettie which was really perfect for her sleek figure, the ensemble was really fresh and rocking.

Next she tries out this Shehla khans's lehenga and some diamond to top it. To me it appears like the designer has drawn huge inspiration from the Alexander McQueen label. But for Indian style, it seems like not working. Not too bad but not great as well.
The other appearance of this young fashionista is in a floral Dolce & Gabbana dress. Which is a hit obviously given the spring/summer season around the world. The hair style she chose seems too simple for such dramatic dress...she could have added a bit more glam/floral hair accessories to complete the look. But in spite of all she looks pretty!

Vidya goes ethnic, classy and elegant as her usual self. The first appearance of hers was a red lehenga with a clean and simple hair do along with a traditional bindi. This was simply neat and too decent. That was sooo Vidya style. Well, who can say no to this Indian beauty. Tweets say that the westerners were in awe of Vidya's ethnic ensembles, they opine her outfits are fresh and unique as they so much used to see same old western gowns.

Second was a saree of classic shades and a kerala traditional style saree along with brown embroidered blouse, the hairdo and make up are kept simple which is again very very desi.
Thrid appearance seemed to be weird because the dupatta over the head ruined the look, she looked like a vintage princess which seemed out of place and the colours chosen also didn't seem much different from her saree.

For the next appearance Vidya chose a saree and ofcourse simple hair do which suits her much. For many this simple hairdos work far better than twists n curls. I am so happy that Sabyasachi has chose not to flaunt any skin or curves with his designs and kept it very decent, dignified and elegant. Moreover all her ensembles are very Indian, be it the choice of textile or embroidered work or the jewellery. She is like on a mission to represent the country's prestigious artisans.
For this attire, the nose ring was an added attraction..while many disliked the nathi, I felt its quite quintessential part of our vintage attires and works well on her. My only complain was that sapphire neck piece which kinda ruined the colour combo..the pop of blue seemed out of place.
Yet to see Aishwarya's appearance. Of course she has come a long way and learned it in a tougher way getting many fashion faux passes from the fashion police for some of her bizzarre appearances. And last time she carried all her baby weight to the festival with poise and grace. This time it may be her baby herself. Hopefully she doesn't disappoint this time.

'Crystal' Clear

Women & Jewels are inseparables as we all know. The love for the bling can never fade.
While the price of Gold has been touching the skies, lots of women started looking for alternative metals that can be as good as Gold. Shiny stone studded items can replace yellow metal and still can be most trendy.
One among such shiny stones are crystals and especially well cut and refined crystals from ace jewel makers like Swarovski.
Swarovski was found by Daniel Swarovski in Austria. Their precious crystals definitely have the luster and luxury too.
And one of my favourites accessories too. For those who like to keep it simple, modern, and inexpensive, Swarovski is a very good option. Posting few favourites picks.

Ditch the monotonous look and embrace some trend ladies :))

Confessions of an Oniomaniac

Hello Fellas,

Missed this space...been a while since I wrote!
Pinterest, a virtual pin-board network,...I guess I was one of those first few subscribers who hooked up to this space while it began in 2010. Since then, this has become a dearest space to me...useful n fun to me in all means. Whoever came up with this idea...Thank them a ton. Long live Pinterest!!! If you are looking for a healthy addiction, check it out :D!!!

I want to start a segment in this space...i.e posting my favourite pictures, because I hate them lying unappreciated. hehe. Isn't it nice to get some compliments for your clicks :). Here comes the first one.
Beginning with a beautiful swan, picture taken at Kew Gardens, London. A place which is amazingly awesome during spring.

********************************************************************

"Oniomania"...Don’t you think it sounds funny?? Being called as Oniomaniac is even funnier. Did it sound as an obsession for onions. Haha. But, that’s not right. Wanna know...read on.
Since my childhood, all the pocket money given to me was spent in a split second earning me a name as a spendthrift. I inherited my Mom's love for shopping but not her wiseness in spending. I enjoyed going to craft, book & art exhibitions while I was in India and emptied my pockets collecting my favourites.
After moving to US, my interest was ignited with the numerous stores & malls around. Fortunately, most of my dear friends also enjoyed shopping like me. Outlet malls were our favourite hangout spots. We used to explore all the stores, shop competitively, and by the closing time, forcibly got out from the store. Once back, we would have a fashion walk to exhibit the finds and chatter until dawn about the fun we had while doing all this.
During my stay in Houston, one of the famous & biggest malls in USA, 'Galleria' was right on the opposite corner of my apartment. My weekends never finished without visiting the mall. Those frequent visits helped me find great stuff at affordable prices. If there would be a hall of fame like the Hollywood, Houston Galleria would not miss my name there, I guess. Wherever I went, I made sure I did some shopping there…the minimum would be collecting souvenir items. My mom always did this. She says apart from the pictures we take, the souvenir items would be the best memories of that place.
My craze for shopping grew manifold after moving to London. As London is known as one of the shopping heavens (others being New York, Dubai, Singapore & Delhi), I had a gala time in there. Fueling my love for shopping, my husband (then boyfriend) used to accompany me so patiently all the time. Is it not surprising to find a guy being patient while shopping? Not sure, if he really enjoyed or cribbed doing so. But, in London, I did find many people like me who enjoyed shopping in spite of sultry sun, stormy rains & frosty winters. Boxing Day sale was the craziest shopping I ever did. I loved it because I could find some best items at great discounts along with bruises as it was a crazy marathon to get in and get out of the stores. Another memorable experience was being part of Vogue Fashion Night Out. Accidentally, I had been to shopping on that night…which allowed me to enjoy luxury shopping experience with great perks. I did post that experience in this page here.  Just as Galleria, Houston, I guess Stratford City mall in London would not miss my name in its hall of fame. Although Stratford city mall was newly opened just before I moved back to homeland, I made sure I made enough visits to make them richer...another awesome hangout in all ways (food, fun, shop & lazy out).
After coming back to homeland, I found it hard to maintain the same pace & interest in shopping because it is totally a swarming exercise here. But, do I avoid...no..I find alternatives :)
Generally shopaholics are considered as brand crazy. I am personally not a brand freak, but I am amazed by the effort that goes into executing a design into a brand…which includes showcasing the design, creating a brand name, advertising and publicizing the same. The value of the brand not only depends on the uniqueness of the design and its quality but also depends on how the brand is conceived, at which status it was aimed etc; this was all known to me recently when I started following some top brands and ace designers on how they evolved into big businesses. I guess, I got too much into the anatomy of brands. I also love and dream to buy brands but when spending some big notes, I will make 200% sure that it is spent on the right item. If you assume, that I spend huge bucks every time I go shopping, you are totally mistaken. I make sure I spend reasonably. But also crib for unnecessary spending at times.
The positive side of the story is the excess stuff can always be sold at the thrift stores or donated at goodwill places.
Alright, I guess, you would have understood by now that the term coined in the beginning was all about the craze for shopping. Yes it is. Oniomania is the technical term for compulsive shopaholism. Don't curse me for writing so many lines to explain a single word, instead consider this as my confession. I disagree if this is called as a disorder. It’s a rejenuvating exercise indeed.
If you are one among the shopaholics, welcome to the league!!! Be proud that you contribute better to the economy instead of worrying to resist the urge!!! ;)

Cheers

Endorsing an Exquisite Flick

Hello All,

Wishing all the readers a very Happy Dussera!!! I hail from the Durga Ma's famous temple town, so Dussera  has always been a special festival for us. Visiting the temple at least once during the Navrathri days was mandatory and quite a feat because there was huge crowd always and it continues to be so even now. Dussera is symbolically celebrated for triumphant victory of good over evil and considered as the best time to start something!

********************************************************

In India, entertainment has been limited to cinema & TV to many. Going out for a picnic, doing an adventurous hike, hanging out with friends is pretty much pertained to youngsters and college goers. Except for few communities from the metropolitans, the scenario hasn't changed. Art exhibitions, magic shows, literature, dance and music festivals etc don’t appeal to most of us. Hence cinema has occupied prominent position in entertainment arena.
The influence of cinema has also been quite strong since decades. Our rituals and festivals also include cinema these days, be it the dialogues, the histrionics, or the music. When cinema has so much to do in our lives, don’t you think there should some responsibility and sensibility in the movie makers. But how many of them have that in mind while crafting their story line??? Imagine a cinema that would conquer all your senses, connects with you emotionally, and still entertains you...have you seen one lately??? I did!
I have been a great fan of director Balki's craft. I loved the cinematography brilliance in his films, and the subtle portraying of the characters. Nothing is overdone, no dramatic scenes yet connects with you so emotionally. Music was also soothing and relates so much with the storyline. After all, it was the maestro's magic! When his wife Gowri Shinde came up with her film, I wasn't surprised but expected that she would have taken up some lessons from her husband, in other words, her cinema would be Balki influenced!!! However, my assumptions were proved to be incorrect after watching the film ‘English Vinglish’. Very few debut directors have the finesse in storytelling; at least most of them tumble at screen playing their characters even though they are very good script writers. I think she has done exceptionally well, that you never miss the continuity in the story. As I mentioned, Balki’s films have excelled in cinematography aspects, the same applies to Gowri’s as well. NYC has been the most picturesque location for filming, but the excellence lies in capturing the soul of the city and was rightly done.
Coming to the storytelling aspect, her choice of lead protagonist is one of the keys to her success. I wouldn't say nobody else could pull off that role like the eternal actress Sridevi, but this being her comeback film is one of the best advantages why the director could succeed. The same strategy, I think worked for a film like Cheenikum too. If not Amitabh, somebody else could also do the role, but films like that need a combination of a crowd puller and an exceptional actor. Here Gowri Shinde had loyally followed her husband’s footsteps.
Coming to the responsible and sensible factor that I mentioned…the film had certainly justified that aspect too by giving 3 very best solutions for the biggest of today’s problems in families.
Problem 1 - The insecurities and the behaviour problems which draw a divide between the teens & parents. Shashi’s (Sridevi) teen daughter’s adamant behaviour hurting her sensitiveness is very well conceived in all the scenes. Neither the mother turns out too dramatic unlike many nor does the eldest in the family (grani) emote furiously. Instead the grani shrugs off saying its very common problem with teens.
Solution – As subtle as the problem was portrayed, so was the solution coming as an answer that was put in a wisest way possible. It was Shashi expressing her feelings in English, which she learnt with determination after being humiliated by her own husband and teen daughter. The solution not being shown as a retort but a simple wise way of making people realize what was their mistake.
Problem 2 – Imbalance in marital relation often misunderstood as infidelity leading to divorce and break ups. Shashi’s husband was shown often occupied with his own world, masking his love with male ego, ignoring her for different reasons, bullying her weakness and taking pride in doing so, not considering her feelings as important as his etc., Time and again this is misunderstood as infidelity and leads to break ups.
Solution – Clearing the confusion airs about this kinda attitude from the spouse, especially when the two have travelled quite a long time together. It is important to bring back the balance. The answer came from the loyal and wise housewife Shashi explaining how a marriage should survive in difficult times. Again, no drama in this process but puts across her lines with austerity ‘that at least one of the two should stand up and take charge of the situation to bring back the harmony instead of vying more and more because that phase is temporary and could be resolved’. Marriages which fall apart for silly reasons have big lesson to learn from the speech that Shashi delivers to her niece. Most of the times, it is confusion that leads to break ups.
Problem 3 – Another common phase in a man or woman’s life which is not generally spoken out in our society considering it as a taboo. Post marriage, for a man or woman, at a certain point of time there would be an attraction from the outside world. There is nothing to disagree. When Shashi was proposed by her co learner in the class, she takes it in a very positive way although shocked for a second. She answers him that she is happy that somebody makes her feel good about herself.
Solution – Being liked by somebody is no way a grave sin; let it be even after marriage. But, knowing where to draw a line is where your dignity lies. As Shashi says that she feels happy that somebody appreciates her beauty and cooking skill while her own family ignores. Well aware with Shashi’s  family issues, when her niece overhears the proposal, she encourages that it is okay to go otherwise…Shashi again strikes back with a crystal clear answer that she is need of respect and not love. Hence she rejects the proposal with poise, grace and clarity. It is very easy to fall for an outsider when your own relation is in a turbulent phase. But having the clarity between the myths and reality at that stage is very much important. The fact that her family ignores her is real, but doesn't love her is a myth! She is very much aware of that which many of them are not in real lives.

All these truths have been perfectly interwoven with the script not sidetracking the main storyline. And of course, Sridevi is one big aspect why you are glued to your seats, she has sheer magic and charm in her performance! On a lighter note, what an idiot would he be if he ignores a wife as beautiful as Sridevi ;). Kudos to the new captain(Gowri Shinde) on the block for the exquisite work she has done!!!

Cheers

Recipe Trails & Random lines

Hi

My title might be confusing to the regular visitors of my blog, wondering whether I changed the genre of my blog??? Honestly, my blog is genreless according to me. I never specialized or focussed on one area in my writings. Everything was random. To not have a genre is good or bad???, I don't know but one has to pay the price of not having many followers. Does it bother me??? I never really thought of ! Anyways I can say that my blog is kinda jack of all trades n master of none. So I keep writing whatever inspires me, sometimes my own experiences and sometimes my expressions that I want to vent out.

Coming to today's post...well I am never a great cook nor a worst cook. I can say I am just a good cook. What inspires me to cook???...the same that which inspires me to eat!!! Cooking is definitely an art. Arts generally are stress busters to me. Cooking is one of them that all of us can practise. My cooking experiments have begun at a very early age, but were fruitful only when I was out of country. Being away from home taught me real cooking.

What/Who helped me??? Cook books...not had one, Mom's instructions over the phone..hmm not really, Blogs...not exactly. But yeah videos done by some cooking enthusiasts and some chefs of course. I always thought food bloggers are mostly housewives with ample of time in hand and hence they spend their time in making tasty recipes and take time to post them on their web pages. My assumptions were put to shame by a food blogger named Sala Kannan., who is a working women, an avid traveller, a photographer and a foodie. Her page veggie belly was just introduced to me today and am already inspired very much by her recipes. Me having some time in hand, thought to serve my foodie hubby a yummy lunch and tried one of her recipe called...Paella style spiced tomato rice. Was it just that??? Well, I added my bit to it by serving a hot cream of veg soup alongside the rice dish. How did it turn out??? ...dig in to know

I am not posting the details of the recipe here but you can find the original recipe details at Veggie Belly page. I can't take the credits expect for the photographs.

The process of the recipe is so simple that even amateur cooks can attempt and make it a success. I wouldn't say that its very new but I find it quite refreshing as I was also taking few photographs of the process.

What I did as a side is, the Knorr veg soup with bread crumbs. I always keep a stock of Knorr soup packets in my pantry and fresh bread of course. To make bread crumbs I tried a rustic way of grilling them in oven and breaking them with free hand. But, I guess you can cut them into proper cubes and then toast/girll which will give an even shape.

Finally the Paella style spiced Tomato rice and Veg soup topped with some oregano is ready.
My husband and I enjoyed the lunch. Thanks to Sala Kannan for inspiring!!!
Are you inspired??? Why don't you try one.

Cheers

One Spring Sunday...

Hello readers,

Yesterday was a super Sunday. Wanna know why???...read on.
Apart from all the larger than life goodies that London offers, I always hated the cold climate of the year. Fortunately, I stepped in the county after the chilling climate has took off. Now its spring time here and I don't have words to express how much it elates my soul.
Following a friend's suggestion to make my good day great, I made a visit to the Columbia Road Flower market...I can't call it a market coz the euphoria was such. Absolutely loved the energy there. Spectacular collection of flowers, coolest country music, sweet n spicy street side snacks, handmade artworks, splendid variety of garden decors and of course the most beautiful n warm spring time. Everything contributed to my super Sunday. I enjoyed each and everything there. There were huge collection of tulips, roses, tropical bunches, cherry blossoms..oh what not. What I seriously regretted about was, forgetting to carry my cammy (camera) and had to adjust with my phone camera which was already dying out of charge.
My best click..I guess :D
The street side musicals were a such a good treat to the visitors...they seemed like a background score for the souls to rejoice. The Chinese n Indian snacks alongside chilled beers served by the street vendors were in full demand. Once u are there, u can't escape from buying the lovely colorful bouquets and can't skip a smile to the vendor's humorous selling charms. n So did I. I bought a beautiful purple and white tulip bunches for a price that is generally never available at markets. Herez flaunting my clicks.
Welcome Strings :)
Yellow Yikes
Tropical bunch with velvety roses
Orchids
rose is a rose is a rose
Brightest of all
Cherry Blossom stems..a new age corner decor
Purple tulip from my bunch
Coolest of all bands
 My fav musician

Hope u people liked them..not that they are all great but to just give a glimpse of what went on there n  to share another side of the city that I gotto explore. excusez moi for the unorganized roll of pics.

Cheers

Travelogue - 1 Road Trip to City of Bath (Part-2)

Hey folks,

I am back posting the 2nd part of the road trip here.

It was a colorful and exciting drive to the castle from Longleat. Near by the castle, a dirt bike jump race was going on. Something that I only saw on TV  and never imagined that I would witness it in reality. Though we didn't manage to get out of the car and watch, we could catch a glimpse of the fun.The place was all jammed with parked cars and so we had hard time to find a parking spot. Unfortunately we had to call off our visit to the castle. I could only manage to get one picture, an outside view of this spot. This castle was built in 13th century and served as a manor house in English Civil war.

The next destination was City of Bath. Before proceeding to the destination description, let me tell you about the route that took us to the city. I should say, it was simply a roller coaster ride. The City of Bath is surrounded by a hilly terrain and the roads were like a sneak peak routes and steep slopes. We came across many small towns on our way to the city and the homes in these towns were  like toy villas with cute gardens, and steeply inclined parking spots at the entrances. Their parking seemed like a challenge to earth's gravity. It seemed like a new face was easily recognized, as we drove along many of the residents who were on their evening walks gave strange looks at us. Apart from residential units, there were so many local pubs and most of them had unique window dressing...may be to distinguish themselves.
Unless and until you own a small car you and of course with exceptional driving skills, you cannot get  out of this route without a scratch. Luckily we drove in a small car. Most of the cars we notices there were Mini Coopers n small coupe cars.
The beautiful window decors used significantly for local pubs
When we neared the City, the drive was like a free fall to the City. The road that took us to the city gave a fantastic view of the City view in between the hills. The buildings and view of the city made it feel like a drive to the medieval period.
With a neat welcome from the absolute clean city roads, our first halt was at Royal Crescent. A one of its kind Georgian Architecture building is among grade 1 listed buildings of England. This was built to serve as residential building but later turned to hotel and office use.The timing of the day was fabulous as it just started drizzling and we could see the dark clouds about to cover the crescent which was an exotic experience for us. There was a big lush green lawn and an Ha-Ha trench(engineering design term) in front of the Crescent.
The Royal Cresent
Next halt was at The Circus...which was originally called King's Circus. Its another Georgian architecture marvel and is one of the best buildings in Britain. It was actually inspired from the Roman Colosseum but this structure can only be viewed only from inside. Its facades are predominantly inspired by Greek and Roman architecture.  Architects and Engineer's must visit place because you get to see a lot of ancient architecture marvels here.
The Circus buildings
Then, we moved on to visit The Abbey and Parade Gardens. The Abbey is a 10th century built church. Parade Gardens is just opposite to this church. This garden was said be best viewed after a rain shower. As I said earlier, we were there exactly after a drizzle. I can only say, one should experience the romantic flavor of the City. In spite of so many visitors, the specialty of the City is that, it is very clean and peaceful. I felt the climate also supports the City to preserve its beauty.

Our initial schedule also included a visit to Roman Baths. City of Bath was established as spa resort by the Romans. The Great Bath is another worth visiting location but we ran late and it was closed by that hour. Anyways, since we decided that the City deserves a second trip, no regrets.
The Abbey
After spending some sweetest and best moments at the City, we were back on to the sneak peak drive,..this time it was not the same. The sneak peak thing ended quickly moving us into the farmlands. The clouds became darker ready to pour down and we drove off with jet speed taking the advantage of being on a lonely road. Rain followed in few mins and also stopped in another few mins. That's the beauty of the place. It lets us enjoy the changes. In midst of the vast farmlands there were very few farm houses here and there and folks you will be surprised to know this..there was an Indian restaurant too.
The hay bale cart
Further down the way we saw a paper flyer board "Free Apples". My apple hunt ended there. All along the drive, we found so many apple trees but there was no possible stopover. I thought I will miss them. As we drove inside the farm we found a lonely farmhouse and giant apple tree in front, farms on other 2 sides and lush green lawn with a hay bale cart on one side and an old couple enjoying their evening tea. When we enquired about the apple board, the old man said. "Help yourself and have a treat". Great! we quickly plucked some green apples from the tree and at the entrance gate there was another small apple tree which bore more fruits than its size.Never such a small tree with so many apples..looked like a Bonsai. Without the old man's notice, we plucked another two and drove off from there. You know how tasty stole fruits are :P
The Avebury Circle
Our final destination was Avebury, another world heritage site. This one was similar to Stonehenge but looked like it was not cared as much as Stonehenge. There were not many visitors and moreover it was not as exciting as the other. So we did not walk inside the site, but just drove around it to get a glance. Before I end let me tell you something else...there were many stables on our way. One that caught our attention was a stable where its horses were dressed..yes folks..the horses were dressed. I wish I could have captured one picture.

Yes by then we finished all the destinations we decided to cover on the day's road trip. The single day drive was felt like a week long drive. Not that we are exhausted but the moments n fun n pleasure we had was very very memorable. I should also the thank the three shades of climate which supported and doubled our fun. I have been on many road trips, each of them were unique and even this was too.

Hope you guys also enjoyed reading this travelogue. More to come, keep peeping into this page.

Cheers
